Exclusive: NCRB report for 2023: Cybercrimes rise by over 30%, maximum cases linked to fraud

According to the report, ‘Crime in India’, the number of cases registered under the cybercrimes category rose to 86,420 in 2023 from 65,893 cases recorded in 2022

Cybercrime in India saw a sharp surge of 31.2% in 2023, with fraud, extortion and sexual exploitation accounting for the majority of cases, according to the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

Key Highlights from NCRB 2023 Report:

Cybercrime up by 30%+ compared to 2022.

Fraud-related cases accounted for the maximum share, especially involving online financial scams.

Rise in UPI, credit/debit card, and phishing-related crimes.

States with the highest reported cybercrime incidents include Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, and Maharashtra.

Authorities note an alarming trend of organized cyber syndicates and cross-border frauds.

Experts warn that as India’s digital economy expands, cybersecurity awareness and preventive measures are critical to protect citizens from growing online threats.

The NCRB also emphasized the need for faster reporting of cybercrime cases through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) to improve response and investigation.
